Clinician Communication

Ensuring effective clinician-patient communication is the right thing to do for our patients, and critical to the delivery of safe, high-quality medical care.

Given limited time and a complicated patient population, strong communication skills are essential for the patient – provider relationship. To help educate, train and develop those skills, Cleveland Clinic has established the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Communication.

With a vision of inspiring a culture of health & healing through relationships, The Center delivers award winning comprehensive training programs focused on relationship-centered communication skills that enhance the physician, advanced provider and patient experience. It developed the R.E.D.E. sm Model as the framework and foundation for communication skills. Through creative facilitation methods and evidence-based content, the Center has demonstrated significant improvements in patient satisfaction, clinician self-efficacy, empathy and staff morale on validated scales for thousands of providers. Its foundational program became a requirement at Cleveland Clinic for all physicians and trainees in 2013 and to date they have trained over 5500 providers internally at Cleveland Clinic AND externally in this course. The team also developed a series of deep dives and advanced topics that are used to support the foundational program internally and externally as well as publications on its outcomes and journey.

The Center for Excellence in Healthcare Communication is driven by a dedicated team of professionals and colleagues with a passion and commitment to improving communication skills of providers. This program provides education, training and resources to physicians and advanced clinical care providers around relationship-centered communication.
